This study will attempt to add to the amount of explanatory research on nationalism and its effect on European Union. On a broader level, much has been written on the role of nationalism in EU stability. The effect of this phenomenon has become an increasingly important concern since 2000. This is due to the different cases of nationalism in various European countries, such as Spain, Italy, UK etc. At present, nationalism is defined as a desire by a large group of people to form a separate and independent nation of their own (James Paul, 2006). Since 2000 has been held 3 referendums in Spain, Scotland, Belgium and Northern Ireland is going to hold a referendum in order to be self-determined. That`s the desire threatens the existence of the EU, because a lot of countries use a right on self-determination which is a cardinal principle of modern international law (McWhinney Edward, 2007). This threat stems from the fact that with the emergence of new countries, the EU will not be able to support and control them. According to the recent research of the Eurolink 2016 since 1990`s EU has created different support programs in such regions as Northern Ireland, Scotland and Belgium on which spends billions of euro. This suggests that these countries will not be able to cope with the consequences of nationalism. Patrick Dixon (2016) has developed a hypothesis of the EU future. This research uncovered different problems EU will face due to proliferation of nationalist sentiment in Europe. According to him EU will face such problems as economic crisis which can lead to the instability in the country and at whole Euro Zone, lack of control and dissatisfaction of developed countries. This leads to the fact that the European Union will no longer cope with their responsibilities as well as League of Nations, that will cause the termination of its existence.
