Abstract We present the results of the operation of a fast and sensitive superconducting antenna-coupled direct detector of THz radiation based on the hot-electron bolometer (HEB) with AC current-bias. We demonstrate experimentally that this approach does not lead to significant deterioration of the HEB sensitivity compared to its value obtained when the same detector is in the DC-biased mode of operation. A numerical solution of the one-dimensional steady-state heat-balance equation for the electrons in the bolometer is used to calculate the value of the HEB responsivity. The results thus obtained are in good agreement with the experiment. We also discuss the possibility of implementation of the AC current-bias technique for frequency-domain multiplexing multi-element arrays of HEBs. This paper includes 4 chapters, 12 pictures and 63 sources.

Student Theses at HSE must be completed in accordance with the University Rules and regulations specified by each educational programme.

Summaries of all theses must be published and made freely available on the HSE website.

The full text of a thesis can be published in open access on the HSE website only if the authoring student (copyright holder) agrees, or, if the thesis was written by a team of students, if all the co-authors (copyright holders) agree. After a thesis is published on the HSE website, it obtains the status of an online publication.

Student theses are objects of copyright and their use is subject to limitations in accordance with the Russian Federation’s law on intellectual property.

In the event that a thesis is quoted or otherwise used, reference to the author’s name and the source of quotation is required.
