Women in the Hagiography of Gregoras

The Bachelor Thesis is dedicated to examination of female characters in the hagiography of N. Gregoras, a Byzantine author of 14th century. It analyses the Vita of St. Theophano, the Martyrdom of St. Vasilisa, the Vita of Constantine the Great, the Martyrdom of Codrat, the Vita of Michael Syncellus, the Vita of Antony II Kauleas, a speech on Nativity and on Presentation of Mary, a speech on Annunciation and a thankful speech of Irene, the Empress. According to the texts mentioned, an image of a saint woman should include such features as intellectuality, smartness, manliness, nobility, beauty. On the contrary, virginity and miracles are a highly recommended, but not an essential part of sanctity. Also there are some details of secular activities of women such as performing of motherhood, ruling of possesion and children's wedding organisation. A special chapter of the thesis enlightens a figure of Virgin Mary whose features are similar to those applicable for all saints but modified and multiplied.
