The paper explores the dynamics and the current state of foreign trade complex of Russia in interrelation with general tasks of economic development. With the help of objective indicators the paper provides a comparative level of competitiveness of the Russian economy, as well as data on missed opportunities for industrial development. It also outlines the key risks of the current model of economic development, as well as factors that cause volatility in production and foreign trade complexes of Russia. Upon review of the analysis the author suggests alternative principles for the implementation of the domestic and foreign economic policy of Russia to ensure a sufficient level of economic independence of the state.
