The new social context of the post-war city led to an intensification of courtyard activities, and the transformation of this space from the realm of adult household-economic activity, with which it was associated when the courtyards were first created, to the realm of leisure (mostly children’s leisure), which became emblematic factor of courtyard life from the 1960s till now. The questions are “What is courtyard community?”, “Were the communities in the courtyards?” and “How do people identify themselves with the community of their courtyard?” In current work there are research carried out in Izhevsk in 2017 about an aspect of the life of the Izhevsk courtyard in the 1960s–1980s: how different generations and age groups appropriated the courtyard in this period and do they feel themselves as a part of particular courtyard society.
