Abstract The current demographic situation in Russia is characterized by decreasing number of marriages with the number of divorces being nearly constant. The marital behavior patterns are changing – average marriage age is increasing, the case of partners cohabiting without official registration grows more common along with the rise in number of children born outside of marriage. This research studies the factors that could possibly influence the dissolution of couple union. On the basis of Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS), logit model is used for estimating the probability of break-up in the next time period after the observed one. The majority of previously conducted studies investigate data of other European countries, outdated samples, do not take into account the ambiguity of influence of some determinants or inaccurately interpret the research results. Coefficients obtained in this paper are based on sample that includes respondents that were/are married, including ones who later got divorced. Basing on results received, one may make a conclusion about the degree of influence economic situation has on Russian families stability, moreover, current research creates the basis for further investigation and controlling the efficiency of various demographic and economic policies proposed by Russian government.
