The paper studies the factors associated with the emergence of systemic banking crises in a sample of developed countries from 1980 to 2016 using a multivariate logit model. The results suggest that banking crises tend to erupt when economy is overheated, particularly when growth is high. Other variables such as depreciation, ratio of M2 to foreign exchange reserves also contribute to the probability of banking crises. This study also found that countries with deposit insurance had a lower probability of banking crisis occurrence.
