Production of a documentary film is a very thorough process that requires both, a lot of hard work and financial support. But what are the main factors to consider when planning your own documentary? This study addresses some of the key theoretical aspects of a documentary film by exploring popular works of the Russian and Western documentary theorists. In addition, I analyze documentaries dedicated to the tragedy that happened in Beslan on 1 September, 2004. The practical part of the study is my own documentary film about the survivors of this atrocious terrorist attack that went on for three days and still haunts many until today. My work consists of two parts, first is the theoretical part, that is followed by the creative project - a documentary film. In the written part of the project, I explore numerous approaches to the production of a documentary film, the state of modern documentary cinematography, as well as TV documentary, and finally, ethical principles. I particularly examine the films about the tragic events that unfolded in Beslan in 2004. The practical part of the project is presented in a form of self-produced documentary film called "Post Beslan"
