Public Scandal as a Tool for Media to Gain Readers Interest (as Illustrated by Coverage of «Weinsteingate» in the Russian Media)
Journalism
(Bachelor’s programme)
2018
Public scandals involving famous people usually are widely covered via media. Mass media at the same time cannot avoid writing about public scandals in order not to stay aside the topic and consciously use public scandals to gain reader’s attention. One of the most remarkable public scandals in the recent years is the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal (Weinsteingate). The information related to it has been widely represented via american media. The cases connected to the issue have been also covered in the russian media though the situation is not connected to the russian inner agenda and does not involve russian citizens. So, though the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal is not actually a vital issue for the russian auditorium, the russian media continue to cover it actively, thus using a public scandal as a tool for gaining reader’s attention. At the same time the same media do not imply the same approach when covering cases of sexual harassment involving russian famous and influential people. This study aims to explore the level of coverage of the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal in the russian media and to explain the reason for such a wide representation of this topic.

Key words: sexual harassment, mass media, russian media, public scandal
