This research focuses on the relationship between corporate governance and the quality of the banking activities – in our opinion it is topical in connection with Basel's recently increased interest in this field. We examined the impact of such indicators of corporate governance as the size of the board of directors and its composition (the number of foreign directors, independent directors, women, CEO and directors, connected to government), and the amount of the state-owned, managers’ and foreign investors' shares, as well as ownership concentration, on three groups of variables – risk-taking (LLP), profitability (NIM) and cost efficiency of banks. The database used for this study contains the information on 90 Russian banks in the period 2009-2017 and this database is unique, since all the corporate governance and ownership structure data is collected manually. We estimate the data by running panel regression and the effectiveness is calculated by the stochastic frontier approach. The conclusions of this article recommends how to organize bank activities from the point of the corporate structure in order to make it more efficient and less risky (for the regulator) and more profitable (for the owners).
