Media and Information Literacy as a Basic Element of Citizens' Education (on the example of the Portal Concept "Understanding Media")

(Master’s programme)
2018
Media literacy has become a vital skill, its necessity, as an obligatory element in media education of all countries of the world, becomes more important every day: every person who wants to make independent decisions and who does not allow manipulation of his/her views in all areas of life, first of all, should be able to analyze information and be critical to it, to decipher the meanings, hidden and obvious, which can affect the awareness of the choice every day.

In Russia there is no conceptual and well-developed approach to the topic of media literacy, the approaches look chaotic, their general classification has not been made. Practices look like initiative, not system projects, do not reflect the gaps and undeveloped MIL segments. As a result, this prevents a holistic and systematic understanding of the issues of MIL by citizens and the awareness of the need to introduce MIL as an indispensable element of media education.

Our work sets a practical goal to fill this gap to some extent: we are going to develop a classification of practices in the field of MIL and media education, to conduct a comparative analysis of the most notable Russian and foreign projects and to present the concept of the portal "Understanding Media", which will become a possible entry point for acquaintance with the MIL, its basic concepts and characteristics, will acquaint you with training materials and online courses in this field, will show the ways for self-education and development of critical thinking.

The master's creative project consists of a theoretical note and a developed concept of an educational portal "Understanding Media".
