Nowadays, in Russian doctrine, marriage is understood as a civil voluntary union registered in the Department of Civil Records (ZAGS), based on care and respect for every family member, both parents and children, free will to enter or leave the union, the stability of marriage and the common goal of every family member to preserve this union. Since for the last 50 years there’s been a redefining of both social norms and legislation concerning permitted diversity of relationships between people in many countries, the aim of this bachelor research paper is to analyse each element of the definition of marriage in order to figure out whether they are really necessary to a marriage underlying the context of respecting people’s rights. The conlusion of the research is that it is necessary to change the approach to marriage - it should be accessible to all people regardless of their sex, gender and sexual orientation. To make it real, it is required to aware citizens about social equivalence of relations regardless of sex, gender and sexuality of partners. Also, the government has to change the state family policy and to abolish acts that discriminate people on the basis of sexual orientation.
