The theme «Embroidery in the practices of contemporary art» was chosen in order to study all the trends of modern embroidery. Embroidery is no longer limited to the use of fabric and canvas, it goes beyond the limits of the usual art. Since 2000s many artists began to rely on problems of social significance and use a lot of innovative ways in their works. For example, embroidery on their own body, and "cross-stitch" embroidery on metal, and creation of volume forms that mimic the human body. The most relevant topic in their works is the study of the role of women in the modern world, because embroidery originally was exclusively female art. Many female embroiderers tend to show that embroidery is not an easy job, as is also evidenced by the interaction of embroidery and body in the works of Eliza Bennet. This is a breakthrough, because now men are embroidering on a par with women, but their works carries a different aesthetics and problems. This research is divided into four chapters — each of them are presented by artists working with a particular kind of material (textiles, paper, non-standard materials and clothes — as collaborations of designers and embroiderers). All chapters are based on the principle of «low — high» and begin with easy-to-understand works and ending with art objects and conceptual projects. This book will help to define the boundaries of modern embroidery and give a description of everything that is happening now with this traditional art. The result of the study was a mini-collection using the author's concept of hand embroidery.
