Factors of Electoral Support of Political Parties in Municipal Elections in the Regional Capitals of the Russian Federation
In this paper the author tested two groups of factors that affect the electoral choice. The group of the socio-economic factors is based on the classical idea of a rational voter. If voter is unsatisfactory, he votes against incumbent, and vice versa. However, Russia has some regime specific and, in this condition, the demonstration of the voter’s rationality can be hampered by another rationality, rationality of heads of municipalities. For them, it is rational to distort the results of the electoral process in favor of the "party of power" in the logic of the "political machines" of voting (Stone, 1996). Based on that, the model also tests the influence of the block of the political and institutional factors. Modeling on the general sample of the regional capitals is complemented by cluster analysis, that demonstrates significance of some causalities for some specific groups of the regions.
