International tourism is flourishing nowadays: in pursuit of the advantages that an increased tourist inflow could bring, new destinations are trying to enter this market. The capital of Russia, Moscow, is among these relatively new players. In the currently implemented programs in this sector an emphasis is placed on the improvement of tourist-oriented infrastructure. However, it has been empirically proved by foreign researchers that there are far more factors that may cause the increase in the number of foreign tourists. Current research reveals factors that can help Moscow to establish on the international tourism market, using multidimensional approach introduced by the leading experts in tourist destination competitiveness and regression analysis of data collected from 1995 to 2015 on measures taken in different fields that directly or indirectly affect tourism. Basing on the empirical evidence, we worked out recommendations for sustainable development of the sector that can raise the interest of local authorities as well of tourist managers and researchers concerned with destination competitiveness.
