Kurdish Issue and the Arab Spring

Student: Petukhov Sergei

Supervisor: Andrey Chuprygin

Faculty: Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs

Educational Programme: Asian Studies (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The Kurdish Issue remains relevant during a long period of time. By 2011, only Iraqi Kurdistan managed to obtain an autonomous status in Iraq, while Kurds in Turkey, Syria and Iran continued their struggle, including armed one, willing to improve their position. The events of the Arab Spring, which emerged in the countries of the MENA region, destabilised it and created favourable conditions for performing various changes, primarily political ones, in these states. Present research is aimed at studying the impact of the Arab Spring on Kurdish territories and figuring out, if it had contributed to the escalation of the Kurdish Issue and led to any significant changes in the status of Kurds in the above-mentioned countries.
