In the period from 1238 to 1380, Northeast Russia was de facto a satellite at first of the Mongol Empire, and then - the Golden Horde. In this regard, many modern historians believe that for the Rus’s of that time, the khan was a legitimate "tsar" (emperor) and open resistance to the Tatars were condemned. This study critically analyzes aforementioned point of view. Critical analysis in this study is based on the data of Old Russian religious and chronicle literature. My goal is to reconstruct the attitude to resistance and to collaboration with the Mongols, and also the status of the Mongolian and Golden Horde’s "tsar" in the eyes of the Russians in the context of their religious worldview.
