The paper analyses factors affecting attendance of federal museums in Russia. The paper summarizes empirical and theoretical studies on «museum goods» market. Research strategy addresses both supply-side factors (number of exhibitions, volume and structure of museum financing, fund characteristics) and demand-side factors (size of the region in which a museum is located, population, level of education, wages, prices of substitute services) that are included in the model. The empirical analysis based on a panel data shows that museums attendance largely depends on the number of exhibitions held by museums per year and the volume of expenditures (supply-side factors), the level of education in a region and prices of movie tickets, chosen as a substitute for museum services (demand-side factors).
