Russia, being an Iranian ally in the political and military sphere, also plans to actively deepen their bilateral economic relations, as evidenced by the increase in the number of meetings at the head-of-government level. This paper gives an overview of the historical premises of the formation of economic relations between countries. What is more, the current study provides the analysis of the development of economic and trade relations which acknowledged positive tendencies at the present stage. We identified the main obstacles to the growth of both trade turnover and other types of economic cooperation. On this basis, the potential for further expansion was assessed. Furthermore, the focus of the study was aimed at determining the most perspective sectors and at the suggestion of ways which would be of key importance for achieving the most effective cooperation.
