This paper examines the effectiveness of mergers and acquisitions in the agricultural sector. Efficiency is estimated from the side of buyer company using event study. Furthermore, the factors influencing the efficiency of M&A transactions in the agricultural sector were analyzed. The sample includes 305 mergers and acquisitions in the agricultural sector for the period from 2007 to 2017. As a result, mergers and acquisitions proved to be effective for the buyer company. Transactions during the global financial crisis have a significant impact on the effectiveness of M&A deals. In addition, domestic transactions were recognized as more efficient than cross-border transactions, and transactions involving companies from developing countries proved to be more effective than developed ones. Among the factors influencing the effectiveness of the M&A transactions can be identified the volume of the transaction, the capitalization of the buyer company and the territorial factor.
