The topic of jihad – the Islamic concept of holy war – has become extremely urgent nowadays. Jihad is being used as an ideological basis by a number of global Islamic terrorist movements in order to implement their aggressive policies. The most vivid example is the Islamic State organization, which has become notorious for mass killing of civilians and currently invites young Muslims from various countries to join it. At the same time, a majority of modern authoritative Islamic theologians criticize the organization for its methods. The present study, therefore, aims to find out how and to what extent the Islamic State’s interpretation of jihad differs from the traditional Islamic position on holy war.
