The Problem of Genre in Indian Mughal Painting

Student: Ivanova Liliya

Supervisor: Anna Guseva

Faculty: Faculty of Humanities

Educational Programme: History of Arts (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The Term Genre comes from the European culture. In Europe genres of painting are formed in accordance with the subject of the image. However, the usage of the term "genre" is more broad, than the framework of European culture. This term also applies to the art of the Orient countries , such as China, Japan and India. The main purpose of this research was to study the possibility of using the European term in the context of the Mughal culture. The main tasks that this work solves are the study of the development of the genre in the context of European culture, the study of the development of the Mughal school of painting and analysis of its subjects, and the analysis of the possibility of applying the genre system of Europe to miniature painting of the Mughals. As a result of the study, it became clear that the use of the term "genre" within the Mughal culture is possible, but only if the classification is based on the division according to the subject of the image. If we take the genre system of Europe in conjunction with the hierarchy and sociocultural background, then the concept of the genre is not applicable to the painting of the Mughal court school of painting.
