Hugo van der Goes (c. 1440 - 1482) is one of the most mysterious figures among early Netherlandish artists of the first row. The painter neither signed nor dated his masterpieces, and among works attributed to master only Portinari Altarpiece can be defined as a faithful panel by van der Goes. From the second half of the 19th century researchers try to identify master's works on the base of distinctive features of that altarpiece. Painter's oeuvre is still in the process of formation. New results of technical investigations appear, new features that characterize van der Goes' works are revealed. The current research is aimed to trace the characteristics of master’s paintings and to find main stylistic features that appear to be the reason of proved or, on the contrary, rejected van der Goes’ authorship. In the research a wide range of literature including contemporary studies of technical examinations has been analyzed, main criteria for attribution problems of painter’s works has been defined. With the help of this summarized information, own opinion was expressed about the authorship of two paintings from the State Hermitage museum, questionably attributed to Hugo van der Goes.
