Imitation Model of Land Desertification Process
Business Informatics
(Bachelor’s programme)
2018
Desertification is a global problem, covering about 3.6 billion hectares of land in the world, which is 1/4 of the total land area. More than 1 billion people live in these territories, and the process of land degradation affects their quality of life. Many countries have adopted a program to combat desertification; however, most of the methods proposed by the United Nations are recommendatory, and there is no existing tool to assess the effectiveness of recommended methods. In addition, the dynamics of the desertification process requires the involvement of modern tools, in particular, simulation modeling, which determines the relevance of the diploma.

The purpose of this work was to identify an effective combination of policies and methods to combat desertification, depending on the characteristics of the soil and the environment.

The developed universal system-dynamic model of desertification process, applicable for different regions and using the specialized MEDALUS method for assessing the sensitivity of the land to desertification, allows conducting the scenario analysis to identify the most effective combination of methods to combat desertification.
