The Role of Words in the Declarative Gesture in 12-14 Month-Olds

Student: Drozdova Anna

Supervisor: Alexey A. Kotov

Faculty: Faculty of Social Sciences

Educational Programme: Psychology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The motives of a pointing gesture in infants are varied and not fully studied yet. One of the classical motives is a declarative motive - to share toddlers’ interest with an adult and attention in an event. Another possible motive is to gain new information about an event. In the current study, an adult reacts to an event in two different ways - either with naming an object that appeared, or with giving information about it. Our hypothesis that gaining the name of the object is the main motivation of declarative pointing was not confirmed.
