Behavioural Competencies in Project Management as a Factor of Project Team Performance

Investigation of the competencies in project management has gained much popularity with a tendency to shift to project-oriented activities and a necessity to develop competencies enabling high projects’ performance. Unlike the majority of the existing works, which are focused on a role of project manager’s competencies, current research is dedicated to the impact of average team members’ competencies level on the overall team’s performance. The work proposes the analysis of 34 project teams realized launches of FMCG product innovations on the Russian and CIS markets in 2016-2018. By results of an estimation of their efficiency and productivity so as their members’ behavioral competencies here stands a conclusion that average level of competencies’ development has a positive impact on overall team’s performance. The only exceptions are competencies “Professionalism” and “Teaching and Developing” which have no significant impact and “Leadership” which has negative impact. Herewith the level of “Leadership” of project manager’s only has positive impact on performance. Based on the results attained during the investigation the paper proposes some recommendations to companies’ project management and human resources offices on developing the competencies of employees engaged in project activities.
