How Do Autocracies Veil Their Own Essence: on the Example of the "Republic Restored" of Augustus

The paper is devoted to the analysis of power relations and nature of authority in "res publica restituta" of Augustus. Legal and non-legal features of the princeps authority's nature are in the scope of present research. The paper consists of two chapters, introduction, conclusion, list of abbreviations and list of references. The first chapter provides a study of political-philosophical ideas on the nature of authority and sovereignty, and research literature on the princeps authority's character as well. The second chapter provides definitions of key vocabulary of Roman political reality of the principate era, legal and non-legal issues of authority’s nature. In the conclusion part the resulting conclusions of the research are presented. For the theoretical framework of the study Cicero's ideas on res publica, Karl Schmitt and Giorgio Agamben's theories on the nature of authority are chosen, and the research is conducted using case-study, historical system’s method and politico-juridical methods.
