The main purpose of this research is to trace the evolution of the male and female image in the Soviet cinema of the late 1930s and after the Great Patriotic War in comparison with state social gender policy. In early 1930s soviet government tried to create a "new Soviet man" by propaganda. Although equality campaign was launched in the early 1930s, woman first of all had to be a mother a housewife, and at last worker. The situation changed after 1945, when because of the Great Patriotic war social changes in soviet society occurred and slightly shifted gender roles. According to the methodology created by Evgeny Dobrenko, socialist realism is a compensation for Soviet reality and every Soviet work of art translated policy of state. We studied popular films of late 1930s and films of Postwar era. We found that despite state policy of gender equality female image in Soviet cinema of late 1930s was rather traditional and started correspond to policy of state after the Great Patriotic war. The study is important for further study of soviet police of gender equality and Soviet cinema pre- and post- the Great Patriotic war.
