Drug Market: Evidence from Russian Leading Darkweb Platform
Joint HSE-NES Undergraduate Program in Economics
The paper is devoted to the analysis of drug supply routes in the Russian Federation and aims to examine the geographic origin of a significant part of marijuana sold in Russia at new extensive data collected on the largest trading platform of the Russian segment of Darknet. Its objective is to find out whether marijuana is produced only domestically or is heavily imported from abroad and, if so, through which border. We investigate the dependence of marijuana prices in various regions of Russia, as well as the approximate volume of its supply to a set of demographic and geographical factors. Eventally, we find a strong and statistically significant negative relationship between the price of the product and the proximity to Kazakhstan and the countries of the South Caucasus.
