The aim of the study was to identify features of psychological separation from parents and the notion of romantic relationships in people who recognize difficulties in establishing romantic relationships. The study is also aimed to determine methods of psychological assistance to those people. The empirical study involved 87 people aged 18 to 35 years (30 men and 57 women). During the study the "Psychological Separation Inventory "(Hoffman) and a questionnaire from the cross-cultural longitudinal study" Boston Couple Study " (Rubin, Pelau, Hill) were used. The study showed that the style of separation from parents does not differ significantly for men and women, but women need emotional approval and support of their fathers more than men, it is more difficult for them to make decisions and act without consulting their mothers. The connection of difficulties in building romantic relationships with indicators of separation from their family (mostly from the mother) in men and women was revealed. Men and women with harmonious separation from both parents had less difficulties in finding a partner and building a relationship. Those who are harmoniously separated from the mother appreciate their partner and the relationships more, are more emotionally involved in the relationships, are more open and less prone to conflicts in their relashionships. Results of the study were tested in psychotherapeutic practice (the paper presents a description of a typical psychotherapeutic case), and were presented at 2 international scientific conferences of young scientists.
