The Relationship between Trust, Inequality and Corruption: A Cross-Country Analysis
Sociology
(Bachelor’s programme)
2018
This study examines the relationship between generalized trust, economic inequality and corruption in a cross-country perspective. The data for 41 countries used in a two-level SEM was drawn from World Values Survey, World Bank, Transparency International and United Nations Development Programme. The findings indicate that income equality has a positive influence on trust level in all given countries. The effect of trust differs depending on country’s economic development, trust and corruption levels. In this regard, analysis of country- and individual level data with multilevel modelling can be more accurate as the possible ecological fallacy is taken into account.
