Educational Programme: Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication (Master)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The key result of this research is the development of the programme and a workbook for the elective course “Let’s speak about Chuvashia”. This result was achieved due to the solution of the problems set at the beginning of the research. An overview of the history of the regional component was undertaken. Normative documents were analyzed starting with the “Education Act” of 1992. We enquired teachers of English working currently in the Chuvash Republic as to their use of the regional component. We also analyzed the existing experience of designing elective courses. As a result, 2 models of use of the regional component in the course of English were developed. Within the first model, a list of topics was offered for the integration of the regional component into the main course of English based on the learning kit “Spotlight” for grades 10-11. The result of the second model is the development of the programme and the workbook for the elective course. The course “Let’s speak about Chuvashia” was tested on students of grade 10 in the Chuvash Republic. The hypothesis that the use of the material about own region increases motivation of students to study a foreign language was proven. Background knowledge about the birthplace facilitates listening, reading and speaking activities. The results of this research can be used for the design of similar courses for other regions of Russia. The workbook “Let’s speak about Chuvashia” can become the source of reference for teachers of the Chuvash Republic.
