Entrepreneurial Activity in Russia: the Gender Differences

Using data from a large-scale project "Global Entrepreneurship Monitoring" the paper researches impact of income, personal perceptions, life satisfaction indicators and entrepreneurial aspirations on the decision of men and women to become entrepreneurs. The study is due to the low activity in women's entrepreneurial participation. Nowadays, gender differences are widely recognized, but one of the main and unexplored problem remains the reasons of the gap in entrepreneurial activity. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that cause gender differences in entrepreneurship. Using binary selection model, were obtained results that showed that the most significant factors explaining gender differences in early entrepreneurial activity and entrepreneurial intentions are perceptual variables and characteristics reflecting entrepreneurial aspirations. Income provides less effect. Although this study answers the questions posed, it does not address a number of important problems that are necessary for further study. One of the directions could be a study, which discusses the extent of the examined characteristics can explain the gender gap in entrepreneurship using a decomposition analysis.
