Human Beauty in Sociological Theory: Comparative Analysis of Classical and Modern Approaches
Sociology
(Bachelor’s programme)
2018
It is difficult to say that the notion of human beauty is systematically and consistenly handled in sociological tradition. However, in many theories, the notion of beauty has been investigated , in varying research contexts and, particularly, in relation to historically and culturally heterogenous empirical domains. Therefore, sociological analysis of beauty first and foremost depends on a systematic and comparative theoretical analysis of different approaches. The main aim of this work is to conduct a comparative and critical analysis through systematization and codification of various social theories of beauty. In the current study the methods of historical-sociological reconstruction and critical theoretical analysis are used jointly. Using these methods, we analyze the important relevant texts of erotic capital theory, evolutionary psychology, neo-marxist theory and feminist theory. At this point, it is crucial to reconstruct the concepts of beauty represented in different studies and to reveal their components. So, this study can be considered as an important step for the systematic and theoretical investigation of varying conceptualisations of beauty on the sociological basis.
