Intonation and Gesture in Use of Russian Discourse Formulas ты что and что ты

Student: Bychkova Polina

Educational Programme: Fundamental and Computational Linguistics (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The work is dedicated to discourse formulae – constructions that are used to express the speaker's reaction to the utterance of the hearer. Unlike other constructions, they do not have any changeable parts and therefore represent a curious case for the Construction Grammar theory. In order to better understand how they function, the study focuses on two particular Russian discourse formulae TY CHTO and CHTO TY, taking a close look on their compatibility with contexts, their historical development and their non-verbal accompaniment such as intonation and gestures.
