This research is devoted to the consideration of the formation mechanisms and transformation of the image of Cuba in the soviet official press during the Thaw period. During this period mass media ware the most effective way of personifying the interaction of the interests of society and the authorities. Penetrating into the productive and social spheres of Soviet peoples' lives, the mass media covered almost all social, professional, national strata and groups of people, all state and public organizations. In this study, the key sources are the government newspaper "Pravda", public journals called "Cuba", "News from Cuba", "International Affairs", and essays on Cuba, its life and progress. The study reveals the main functions of the image of Cuba in the rhetoric of the Soviet Union, which are closely intertwined with the political and social fabric of the state in the period under investigation.
