Underground as a Strategy of Constructing of Musical Communities (on the Materials of the Project “Boiler Room”)

The work based on the materials of the Internet project "Boiler Room" explores ways of using the category of "underground" in relation to music communities and their activities. Released from the western club culture with it's peculiar representations about "authenticity", "mainstream" and "underground", this project combines "live" performances of musicians and their Internet broadcasts. The work considers the history of the Boiler Room, explores strategies of using of Internet technologies by this project for the purpose of asserting its "underground authenticity", and transformations undergone by this category under the influence of the Internet are explore. Based on the materials of the project, an assumption is made about the formation of a new "authenticity", peculiar for music Internet communities.
