Performance Evaluation of Apache Spark on Raster Data

BIG DATA, APACHE SPARK, HDFS, CLUSTER COMPUTING, REMOTE EARTH SENSING, MICROSOFT AZURE, HDInsight, SCALA, GEOTRELLIS The object of research - raster data processing operations. The subject of research - performance evaluation of Apache Spark during spatial operations on remote sensing images from Landsat 8 satellite. The research contains such operations as tiling, reprojection, NDVI calculation, pyramid building, spatial data partitioning and saving data into distributed storage. Spatial operations were implemented using Scala programming language and GeoTrellis library. Apache Spark cluster was made using Azure HDInsight The relevance of the study is determined by the development of innovative geospatial data processing system on the computer science faculty in Higher School of Economics. This brings a need of comparing different cluster computing systems to demonstrate advantages of the system under development.
