Trends in Fertility and Nuptiality in the Countries of the Middle East and North Africa
Demography
(Master’s programme)
2018
The main goal of my work is to understand how strong the link between social-demographic factors, fertility and marriage in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa is. Taking into account fertility and marriage, how can the rapid changes in Morocco, where access to education and social development lags far behind neighboring countries such as Algeria and Tunisia, be explained? And vice versa, how can the persistence of high fertility in Egypt be explained? Finally, what are the main factors determining the changes that have occurred in these countries, where the participation of women in the labor force is one of the lowest in the world and where their emancipation is far from complete both in legal terms and in everyday life?
