This precise research tackles the importance of language usage and employment for symbolic and political purposes. It depends mainly on cultural and social writings by a group of authoritative writers in the field of language, culture and heritage in Sudan. Most of the resources used in this work were written and published by famous authors. The research cited some works by Dirrar, Abdin, Sideeq and others as well as a number of sample poems used for illustrative purposes. Some other works were also used for the purpose of this research. Most of the works used by the researcher falls within socio-cultural writings. Sudan Radio is also cited as a reliable recording source. The research came in four chapters. The first chapter contained an introduction and literature review and other related topics. The second chapter includes the most outstanding efforts and resistance activities played by the Sudanese intelligentsia in their struggle against colonial powers and dictatorship regimes. Illustrative Samples of poems, songs and poetry with symbolic meanings and connotations in Sudanese Arabic with transcriptions and translations into English, have been given and explained. Other chapters included most of the samples, conclusion, findings, interpretations and recommendations. The researcher recommends additional comprehensive work to be carried out in order to explore and interpret the phenomenon of protest songs in a wider and comprehensive context.
