The research is devoted to the analysis of the political language of deputies-writers at the First Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR (1989). The paper singles out and describes the features that distinguish the political language of writers from the political language of other deputies of the Congress. To describe the political language, the most frequent metaphors were studied, such as medical, construction and metaphors of learning, as well as the notions and ways of argument used by the deputies. As a result of generalization and comparison, it was revealed that the differences between the political language of writers consist in that, firstly, they often use the notions of morality, humanity, morality, which speaks of a special vision of politics: for writers, morality is the basis of politics. Secondly, for the speeches of writers, the idea of symbolic representation is important, which turns out to be more necessary than the actual political measures. As for the similarities of political languages, it can be noted that judging by the usage and context in which these or those concepts were used, most deputies had similar views on politics. For example, Lenin, democracy, glasnost, parliamentarism and the rule of law have always responded well, for example, Stalin, totalitarianism, the command and administrative system, the party apparatus, and centralized administration are bad.
