«Studien of the Interior Russia» by August von Haxthausen is one of the renowned books that have has a great influence on the representation of Russian Empire and Russians for Western Europe. Under these circumstances, Moscow and Saint Petersburg are the most demonstrative objects regarding almost all aspects of the Russians’ life of the middle 19th century. The overall goal of the paper is to describe the image of Moscow and Saint Petersburg as the central cities of the Russian Empire and to determine how features of this perception have been established by purposes of the Russian government in reply to the book of Astolphe de Custine «La Russie en 1839». The research showed that the choice of described object in the recreation of urban and cultural sphere was not arbitrary, but elaborated special for August von Haxthausen. These measures were aimed at the development of Russian image after the book of Astolphe de Custine «La Russie en 1839».
