Sergey Turgenev's Library: a Book Collection of 1813

Student: Lioga Liubov

Educational Programme: Philology (Bachelor)

Year of Graduation: 2018

The research is focused on the handwritten catalogue of Sergey Turgenev’s home library. It consists of two documents: the first list was arranged in 1813 by the order of Sergey Turgenev and the second – in 1831 – after his death. The main purpose of the study is to reconstruct the context of creation of two lists and to review both of them in terms of a manorial library of Russian 19th century noble family. Cataloging of private book collections has already become a part of reading culture in the beginning of 19th century. My hypothesis is that Sergey Turgenev’s catalogues form part of Turgenevs’ family book collection, predominantly composed by his father, Ivan Petrovich Turgenev.
