The Poetics of Translations of Stefan George in the 20th and 21st Centuries

Stefan George (1868–1933) is one of the key figures of German poetry of Symbolism. Despite the fact that he gained popularity and recognition in his native country, Russian translations of his poems, however, remain almost unresearched up to now. The object of the following research is a number of George’s poems, translated by the poets of the Silver Age (such as Vyacheslav Ivanov, Valeriy Bryusov and etc.), on the one side, and modern translators like Konstantin Azadovskiy and Vladimir Letuchiy, on another. This paper attempts to find out what was the difference between the so-called “poetical” way to translate the texts written by George, represented by George’s contemporaries in the 1910s, and the “philological” method of translation that can be seen in the works, published from 1997 по 2009.
