This research examines the works of A.V. Markov, Russian philologist and ethnographer of the early 20 century. The aim of this research paper has been to see the works of Markov against the background of the production of the late Imperial ethnographical knowledge. The research is based on the analysis of Markov's collections of folk poetry, his attitude towards the peasants, who performed it, as well as on his philiogical studies of folk poetry and explorations in the field of physical anthropology. The research shows several characteristic features of this particular period in the history of humanities. The main one is the combination of evolutionism and the romanticism in the way peoples are seen. It is shown that according to Markov the people, and not the state, is the main actor in history, yet in the same time there are many deplorable factors in the lives of the common people, who are presented as uncivilized.
