The work is devoted to the study of the patterns in the development of science and education in a technical university. The main research question of the work is how the results of research activity affect the results of educational activities. The problem is investigated using casual analysis of a group of regional technical universities of Russia. Challenges of monitoring the Russian universities have been analyzed and the justification of the research hypothesis has been conducted. A research methodology has been developed, which is based on a correlation analysis of pairs of effective indicators of research and educational activity within the selected group of universities. The study is conducted on a group of thirty regional technical universities of Russia. The results of the work showed that there is no significant influence of the research activity of academic staff on the quality of education for the university graduates. The moderate impact on the salaries and employment rates of university graduates is caused by the indicators of research activities related to the work on funded projects and grants, as well as publications related to the international citation bases Scopus and Web of Science. Based on the results of the study, management approaches were proposed and open research questions were formulated for further work.
