In this paper, the criteria for success of sports megaprojects are explored using the example of the FIFA World Cups. To date, there is no single universal methodology for their formation, with the help of which it is possible to assess the effectiveness of the impact of preparing and holding an event on the economic, social and tourist spheres of the country's life. Despite the complex nature of the problem, the author of this research tried to identify a number of universal indicators of the success of sports megaprojects on the basis of the analyzes of the FIFA World Cups, suggesting a quantitative target value for each of them. Despite the fact that the formation of the criteria and their target values was carried out using analysis of the FIFA World Cup, the results of the study are supposed to be applied to other types of sports megaprojects, since the target values of the described criteria are relative and can be applied during the assessment the impact of such projects on areas of different scale.
