People with various mental disorders are subjected to severe social isolation. The reason of negative perception of people with mental disorders is in a stigma of mental diseases that is posing as an actual social problem. This paper aims to investigate the process of social adaptation of people with mental disorders due to the changing of status from healthy to mentally sick person. We are going to focus on how people with mental disorders overcome the hostile social attitude towards them and how they adapt to the social reality when they realize they are sick. We are using a qualitive research methodology and focusing on interview method because we are interested in a personal experience of social adaptation and a perception of disorder due to the change of status. We supposed that interviews with sick people may help in exploring individual mechanisms of adaptation and their personal experience of overcoming the social stigma. Thus, the empirical object of the study is people with experience in the medical or therapeutic treatment of mental disorders. As a result, we are going to answer how people with mental disorders adapt to the social environment due to the change of status and which type of adaptation – active or passive one they choose. Also, we are going to concentrate on mechanisms of social adaptation according to Merton’s conception described in the “Social structure and anomie” and examine the types of adopting behavior people follow when they realized they got sick. In a first part – the introduction - we are going to describe the background of the study, its delimitations and give definitions of key terms. Then, in a main body, we are going to denote the theoretical framework, used methods and results anticipated.
