The so-called “antitrust clash of the decade” between the European Commission and the Russian state energy giant Gazprom has influenced the format of the EU-Russia gas dialogue. Case was a lever of power, showing not only the stability of relations between the Russian Federation and the EU, but also whether the supply model that characterized the European gas market has changed radically in recent decades. The problem of this study is whether the EU’s actions to Gazprom can affect the restoration of the competitive market environment in the internal market of the Union. The main research method is factor analysis, which allows to evaluate the complex interdependence in gas relations of the dialogue partnership between Russia and the EU. In the course of an empirical trial of the EC proceedings against Gazprom, it was possible to come to a number of conclusions. The Union failed to find conclusive evidence that Russia used gas as a political weapon directly against the EU or individual member states. In addition, Gazprom now accepts the validity of the EU market rules to the extent that no one could have expected at the beginning of a hearing. Therefore, the results of the dispute should be considered positive for both parties. This argument is supported by the fact that the actions of the EC in relation to Gazprom may affect the restoration of the competitive market environment in the internal market of the Union. At the same time, Gazprom remains in a leading position in the coming years.
