Mandelstam as a Translator (Based on Old French Texts of the 11-13 Centuries)

The graduation thesis focuses on analysis and interpretation of seven translations and poetic transformations of Old French texts (The Song of Roland, The Four Sons of Aymon, Aliscans, Life of Saint Alexius, The pilgrimage of Charlemagne, Le coronement Louis, and Berthe aux grands pieds) made by Osip Mandelstam. In this paper, the translations are analyzed from various perspectives: stanzas, metres, rhythmic organization, and vocabulary. To examine the texts that have never been a subject of a thorough systematic study is a matter of great importance, as it can significantly improve the knowledge of Mandelstam as a poet and translator as well as show the influence of the above-listed works on his lyrics of the 1920-1930s.
